My Top 3 Priorities

  • Better the lives and futures of our students, their families and our community.
  • Class size reduction and a better educational environment.
  • To support teachers and parents to better the students' academic skills.

Denis O'Leary has served our students as a classroom teacher for 27 years. He has developed curriculum, and addressed educational issues in local, state and national forums. Denis was also invited by Mexico's federal government to address education concerns in the Foreign Ministry in Mexico City.

Denis O'Leary has served our community as an Oxnard School District Trustee. In this time Denis has taken action to deal with state budget cuts, overcrowding, student achievement, literacy support and the selection of a new Superintendent among many other issues.

Denis is a member, California Teachers Association.  Past District Director for the League of United Latin American Citizens.  He has recieved the "Excellence in Mentorship Award" LULAC Nat'l Convention, Wiconsin, 2006,  Latino Leadership Award, El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, 2007and  the Advocate for English Learners Award, CABE, San Francisco, CA. 2000 among other recognitions.

Denis has helped the Oxnard School District get away from the failed and expensive system of a multi track year round school schedule.

Denis proposed, wrote and helped pass the Oxnard School District's Living Wage Policy. This will recognize that the least paid employees of the district must be able to pay the high expenditures brought by living in Oxnard.

Denis supports local unions in the construction of schools.  If a child enters a classroom knowing that their parents have a secure job with health benefits: the child will acheive more in school.

Denis has helped strengthen our educational curriculum. Student test scores are up. They still need to improve. Denis will continue to fight for the higher standards and expectations we place on our children and teachers.

Student success is my focus. As a teacher for 27 years and parent, I see it firsthand.

I have taken action to deal with overcrowding, low student achievement, and literacy.

Oxnard's students and teachers need our continued support. I acknowledge our parents and teachers have the same goal: a better future for Oxnard's children.

I wrote and helped pass the Living Wage Policy. If parents earn a living wage, have security of employment and health care, their children do better in school.

Instruction, materials, nutrition and a safe learning environment all play an important part in the education of our children. I will work with city, county, state and federal officials to better Oxnard's future.

I am proud to have cut the inaugural ribbon of Juan Soria School and now to see Soria be recognized with the Gold Ribbon Schools Award for academics.

I have been our community’s voice advocating for students, parents, environmental justice and integrity. When asked to vote on a waiver for the daughter of a fellow trustee over 22 qualified administrator candidates, I was the only trustee to vote no on what I saw as nepotism.

I would appreciate your vote. My cell number is 407-1987.
