Biography

For the past 20 years, I have devoted my time to working for equitable and high quality learning opportunities and public education for all in Santa Monica. In 1998, I had a “big idea” that Santa Monica could be (and should be) a model lifelong learning community - see www.smllc.org.  I have basically been chasing that dream ever since, pursuing every avenue available to me, and working with allies to push that agenda from every angle. I do this because I believe that education is singular in its ability to transform individual lives and society at large, and because I believe that every child should have every opportunity to thrive. I see access to high quality learning opportunities as a fundamental quality of life and equity issue.

This “big idea” has driven my public life. To advance high quality education and lifelong learning for all, I have served as PTA president at Will Rogers, Samohi, and the PTA Council. I founded the Santa Monica Lifelong Learning Community Project  -- www.smllc.org. I was a founding member of CEPS –www.excellentpublicschools.org -- and co-chaired for 5 years, resulting in the Facilities Use Agreement which generates more than $7m/year for SMMUSD.  I have participated in the Cradle to Career Initiative since its inception, and, of course, I also serve as a trustee for Santa Monica College!

I am totally committed to the mission of the community colleges and I also believe that I have acquired a very strong skill set, knowledge, and relationships in my home community and in Sacramento that make me an excellent and valuable turstee, an asset to SMC, and an effective advocate and change-agent for student success.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

Although I contribute to many non-profits, essentially I believe it is the job of government to serve the public and rectify wrongs; that government should be and can be effective and beneficial; and that public money should support the public good. Most of my advocacy efforts have therefore aimed at influencing public policy and public funding to achieve meaningful and high quality learning opportunities for everyone.
