STATEMENT OF CANDIDATE FOR UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE, 51ST DISTRICT

JUAN VARGAS

Occupation: United States Representative

Education and Qualifications:

Juan Vargas. Fighting for our Future.

Juan Vargas grew up on a chicken farm, one of ten children. Juan earned a college scholarship, taught school and studied to be a Catholic priest. He graduated from Harvard Law School and returned home to make a difference. He was elected to the City Council, the State Legislature and the United States Congress.

Protecting Children. Juan wrote “Hazel’s Law” to keep sex traffickers from preying on our children. He wrote laws forbidding sales of tobacco and drug paraphernalia near schools. Juan led the fight to reverse education budget cuts and restore school funding.

Building an efficient border. Juan secured millions of dollars to rebuild the Calexico Border Crossing, reducing wait times and reducing pollution throughout the Imperial Valley.

Protecting Seniors. Juan opposed Social Security and Medicare cuts and fought to end tax breaks for large corporations and multi-millionaires.

Jobs/Rebuilding Our Economy. Juan understands the Valley’s high unemployment rate. He wrote the Neighborhood Business Protection Act to help small businesses create jobs and training programs in our communities. Juan knows the importance of renewable energy and will ensure that this resource brings permanent jobs to the Imperial Valley.

Veterans. Juan believes our Veterans deserve excellent health care, housing, counseling, respect and job training. Juan fights to honor those that fought for us.

Juan Vargas. Luchando por nuestro futuro.

Juan Vargas se crio en una granja pollera, uno de diez hermanos. Juan obtuvo una beca universitaria, enseñaba en la escuela y estudió para ser padre católico. Se graduó de la Facultad de Derecho de Harvard y volvió a casa para marcar una diferencia. Fue elegido al Concejo de la Ciudad, a la Legislatura estatal y al Congreso de los Estados Unidos.

Protegiendo a los niños. Juan redactó la “Ley Hazel” para impedir que los traficantes de blancas abusen de nuestros niños. Él redactó leyes que prohíben la venta de tabaco y de parafernalia de drogas cerca de las escuelas. Juan dirigió la lucha para invalidar los recortes en presupuestos educativos y restablecer el financiamiento escolar.

Construyendo una frontera eficiente. Juan obtuvo millones de dólares para reconstruir el punto de entrada de Calexico, disminuyendo los tiempos de espera y reduciendo la contaminación en todo el Valle de Imperial.
