Candidate Lisa Romero, State Assembly, District 11 Biography

Assembly District 11 (Solano County) Vacaville, Fairfield, Travis Air Force Base, Suisun City, Rio Vista,  Collinsville, Birds Landing (Contra Costa County) Knightsen, Oakley, Pittsburgh, Discovery Bay, Byron, Brentwood, Bethel Island, Antioch (Sacramento County) Walnut Grove, Isleton, Locke

Lisa Romero for Assembly District 11

Lisa Romero declares “I am a nurse, educator, leader, mother and Latina running for Assembly for all those in District 11 that deserve positive change.”  Her experience working in many areas of nursing, as a college instructor and professor, and in the community would be valuable assets to the Legislature and to her constituents.

Romero has worked as a nurse for the past 28 years, much of it in supervisory or leadership positions.  She has worked for 16 years as a nursing instructor or professor in Solano and Contra Costa Counties.  She has developed a wealth of experience not only with health issues, but also with issues that intersect with health, such as homelessness, aging, diversity, and mental health.

She says “My upbringing, career, leadership and education give me a strategic and creative edge to advocate, create change and lead residents of District 11 in the right direction.”

Lisa Romero explains, “I want to be an Assemblywoman because District 11 needs new leadership.  My opponent Jim Frazier is the co-author of the gas tax which was passed without taxpayers’ vote and affects hardworking families in California.  The gas tax has no cap and will increase with inflation.  We need to vote Yes on 6.  I am a ‘gas tax hero’ and the Northern CA representative for the Yes on 6 Campaign”.

“The residents in District 11 want affordable housing, protecting our farmers and the delta by not supporting the twin tunnels, focus on supporting old and new businesses, resources for our veterans, improved and safer schools, resources for our teachers, affordable and accessible healthcare, mental health support, answers to homelessness …” and more.

Assembly District 11 runs from Vacaville on the north to Brentwood on the south.  It contains a large part of the Delta.  It includes northeastern Contra Costa County, much of Solano County, and the southern part of Sacramento County along the Sacramento River.  Its biggest cities are Fairfield and Antioch.  (See the map.)  The two-term incumbent failed to get 50% of the vote in the primary, indicating that he is vulnerable.

Lisa Romero was born and raised in New Mexico in a bilingual home.   Her mother is Mexican and Native American.  Her father, who is Spanish and German, is a retired nurse.  He was raised on a farm where they raised livestock, wheat, many vegetable crops, and orchard fruit.  Lisa has two sisters who are nurses and a brother who is a pharmacist.

Lisa started working part-time in a restaurant at age 12.  After attending the Career Enrichment Center, she was able to earn her Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Degree at the same time that she finished high school.  She moved to Maine, where she earned her Associate and Baccalaureate Degrees in Nursing, while working in nursing at the same time.

More education and the sunshine drew Romero to California, where she earned a Masters in Counseling at CSU East Bay.  She has worked in many areas of nursing, including medical-surgical, neo-natal ICU, home health, mental health, and aging.  In addition, for 16 years Lisa has taught nursing at Contra Costa College, Solano Community College, Dominican College, and Samuel Merritt University.

Lisa has over 20 years of leadership experience, including as a Charge Nurse, Supervisor, Nursing Professor, Assistant Director for a nursing school, and Director of Education.  While working full time as an RN and Nursing Professor and starting a family, she pursued a Doctorate in Education, which she has nearly completed, having already defended her dissertation.

In 2017 Lisa worked at Travis Air Force Base as a contract nurse with our active duty and veteran community. She also manages the home rentals that she and her husband own.

Lisa has volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children.  She volunteered as a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) President.  She has helped with mental health and homeless in the community by coordinating clothing, games and holiday efforts.  She also served as an officer of the Solano County Republican Central Committee.

Her supportive family includes her husband Mariano and two children, Abryanna and Valentino, who attend a dual-immersion Spanish program.  They like to ride their Harley Davidsons, attend church, enjoy the outdoors and be a part of the theatre and Kajukenbo martial arts community.

Lisa summarizes, “I will bring transparency, fiscal responsibility and accountability to the residents in District 11.”
