79th District

Assemblymember, 79th Assembly District

I am honored to stand up for the 79th District every day to create more hope and opportunity for every resident.

My parents were sharecroppers who came to California for a better life. Our family found opportunity that enabled me to attend a great public university, earn a Ph.D. and become one of the youngest professors ever at San Diego State.

As a former school board member and life-long educator, I believe in a California where everyone who studies diligently and works hard can get ahead. But in today’s economy too many people are working harder than ever before but are just treading water or even falling behind.

Because education is still the key to opportunity, this past year I continued my life-long work for better schools by passing bills to make affordable early childhood education more accessible, expand the San Diego Childcare Center, and ensure schoolchildren and low-income college students have nutritious food.

I have fought to strengthen our economy with policies that encourage small business growth to create good-paying jobs for residents and veterans.

Because we all deserve safety, I created tougher laws to protect our seniors in nursing homes and improve care for victims of these crimes.

And a new law I sponsored will help take partisan politics out of local elections.

I would be honored to earn your vote so I can continue the fight for a California with more opportunity, better education, new high-wage jobs and safer communities.
