Why I’m running for Rancho Palos Verdes City Council


Here is a brief description of why I have decided to run for City Council.

.       I’m running for RPV City Council to give back to the community where I grew up and that I’m raising my family in.  From before the time I became an Eagle Scout here in Palos Verdes, I have believed in community service and community involvement.   This was a strong recurring family ethos while I was growing up, instilled upon me by my grandfather and the rest of my immediate family.  I currently have and have had the honor of serving and volunteering on several local and community organizations including, as a member and now Chairman of the Rancho Palos Verdes Planning Commission, member of the Rancho Palos Verdes Finance Advisory Committee, Vice Chair of the Lomita Railroad Museum Foundation, Coach/mentor for Rolling Hills Little League, and Coach and Referee for AYSO Region 10.  All of these experiences have further strengthened my commitment to Rancho Palos Verdes and our surrounding community.

RHNA - Regional Housing Need Allocation and State Mandated Affordable Housing Goals


Here are my thoughts on RHNA and the issue facing Rancho Palos Verdes

      One of the possibly most impactful and far reaching potential changes to our city and way of life is how the state of California solves its growing housing shortage.  There are several proposals working their way through the State House and State Senate Chambers, which could strip local control for housing permitting from the city and vest it with the State.  These new rules could significantly increase the stress on current infrastructure for water, sanitation, power and further contribute to highway gridlock.  We need to continue to work with Sacramento, but help guide our State Representatives to craft reasonable legislation.  We need to be in compliance with state laws, but those laws need to be crafted to take into consideration local conditions and not strip away local control or local insights.  The State of California needs to help facilitate affordable housing for all of its citizens, but not at the expense of local governments nor at the expense of underfunded / ageing infrastructure.  Sacramento needs to develop an integrated plan tying together affordable housing initiatives with infrastructure modernization and capacity enhancements.  We cannot allow for significant housing density increases in “bedroom communities” without infrastructure to support that increased density.

Rancho Palos Verdes Civic Center / City Hall Construction


Here is my position on the potential construction of a new Rancho Palos Verdes City Hall

.       Our city was built on the hallmark of fiscal conservancy and to reasonably control the tax burden on the citizens of our city.  One of the early hallmarks of this policy was our reuse of the 1950’s era USAF Nike Missile base as our city hall facility.  While this facility has served the city well over the last 40 years, our city has grown in the intervening time and with that growth city services / staff have also grown.  The current City Hall facility is antiquated and in need of modernization and consolidation.  For our city to continue to serve the needs of our citizens, our city staff needs to operate as efficiently as possible.  One way to increase efficiency is to reevaluate how our city hall functions and supports the efficient deployment of city services and city business.
