Biografía

Paola Laverde was born in Colombia and at the age of two moved to Los Angeles. Now living in Berkeley, she became a U.S. citizen at the age of 30 and has never missed voting in an election since. Ms. Laverde has a background in bilingual broadcast journalism, courtroom and political asylum interpreting, and video production for government and nonprofit organizations. Ms. Laverde currently uses her communications skills as a Public Information Officer for the State of California.  As a broadcast jouranlist, Ms. Laverde worked for Telemundo and Univision, winning an Emmy for a local newscast.  As a video producer, she created and produced The WIC Show and El Programa de WIC, promoting Alameda County’s Women Infant and Children (WIC) program. One of the show’s segments has gone viral with over 43 million views.

Currently Chair of the Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board, Ms. Laverde is in her second term as a publicly elected official. Her experiences as a tenant—- she has experienced both landlord harrassment and an Ellis Act eviction, and spends over half of her paycheck on rent— fuels her passion to give voice to those who have been negatively impacted by the housing affordability crisis.
