My Top 3 Priorities

  • Opening lines of communication between SDUSD and all other stakeholders.
  • Keep resources focused on the students. SDUSD spent almost $1billion with very little to show for it, while not being able to manage their day-to-day operating budget.
  • Ensure that the Quality of life throughout the entire educational experience for students, teachers, and parents is optimized by ensuring adequate supplies, salaries, learning environment, and engagement are the District's top priorities.

Ten-year residents of Clairemont, Stephen and his wife Angela, despite career opportunities out of state, decided to plant roots in the community, seeing this neighborhood as the perfect place to raise their family, which now includes three children; Dario, Giuliana, and Alida. This is why Stephen joined the Clairemont Town Council (CTC) in 2013. As a fully invested husband and father, passionate entrepreneur, and career Business and Asset Protection professional, he has gained a wide range of experience that allows him to maintain a sense of balance even when juggling his diverse and demanding roles in unpredictable times.

Stephen’s business-minded, entrepreneurial and decidedly professional approach combines seamlessly with his highly developed leadership, team building, strategic planning, and Finance Asset Protection & Risk Management skills to enhance his civic engagement.  With a solid track record, which includes, for example, success in devising strategic initiatives to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in human capital, budget, and expense liabilities, Stephen is perfectly poised to understand the complexities of challenge.

Armed with transferrable management skills, Stephen is adept at facilitating the technical handling of complex aspects of any industry. His strengths include outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, which consistently equate to the ability to create and foster positive work environments, positive outcomes and positive relationships of trust with the community, business partners, and industry leaders.  Born in California and raised by grandparents, Stephen learned the importance of making things happen, of being a team member, and of selflessness. He graduated high school and helped lead his Wrestling team to League championship victory, all while working a part-time job at the local Police Department.

Stephen's leadership abilities have matured alongside his academic accomplishments –an Associate degree cum laude in Legal Studies, a Bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in Business, with a minor in Criminal Justice, and, most recently, a Master’s degree cum laude in Business Administration, with a minor in Strategic Leadership – and have led directly to the successful startup of a minority-owned small business. As well as being a dedicated husband, father of three, and a responsible and innovative manager and entrepreneur, over the past three years Stephen has volunteered for a variety of non-profit and civic organizations throughout San Diego.

Today, Stephen wants to serve as your voice in the San Diego School District, a voice that echoes your concerns:  a voice for Fairness, Accountability, and Choice.

Political Philosophy

Stephen understands the true purpose of education. As an adult he made the decision not to be complacent with his accomplishments and instead took on the challenge of returning to the classroom in order to not only provide more for his family and career, but also to embark on the journey of becoming a Lifetime Learner. He may not be an institutional educator or have a Doctorate degree but his real world first-hand experience in the business and Academic Administration work has led him to an understanding of the importance of education, and how it can change an individual's life.

Stephen knows how important high academic achievement is for everyone, and he recognizes, celebrates, and encourages these accomplishments for every student starting in TK through Graduate School. He also understands that some students feel disenfranchised with the traditional school system and believes that it is our duty to engage these students in order to aid them in becoming Lifetime Learners and productive members of society. He understands the need for alternative and vocational programs in order to provide our students with the best chance at engagement, while using traditional methods as foundational guidelines to maximize quality of life throughout the educational experience for themselves, teachers, and parents.

Most importantly he recognizes that schools and the learning environment should be a safe and comfortable place for young people to grow and become self-actualized advocates for their own futures. This thinking helps to facilitate student achievement. This includes making connections to higher education and identifying Educators, Mentors, and people who inspire. Much like Stephen many modern students face the need to achieve their higher education through the use of non-traditional university models. With his real world experience he was able to bridge the gap between student and institution and did not let his economic challenges prevent him from achieving his goals and become an example for students of all grades and ages to follow. Knowledge isn’t his challenge, what to do with it is. That is why he’s running for San Diego Unified School District. Students need a voice and choice; teachers want fairness and equality, and parents are essential to learning success.
