Questions & Answers

Questions from The League of Women Voters North County San Diego (3)

Do you support increasing the housing density in your district of Oceanside? What other options might there be for improving the City's supply of affordable housing?
Answer from Lawrence "Larry" Kornit:

Housing really should be built in areas in the mass transit corridor.  By this, we can save cars from being on the road and lowering Oceanside's carbon footprint. Also, homes need to be made affordable and to do that we need to bring more business opportunities into Oceanside.  By streamlining the permit process and giving prefered priority to "Green Tech" businesses who can employ 40 + people will increase our tax base and allow Oceanside to reap the rewards. Increasing housing density should only be done in areas that can support it. Not in the rural areas that would requier a number of infrastructure changes and creating more traffic in areas that can barely handle what they have.

Do you approve of the City's current approach to addressing the problems of homelessness in Oceanside? What specific changes, if any, would you make?
Answer from Lawrence "Larry" Kornit:

No, because homelessness is not a one size fits all problem and so it is not a one size fits all solution. We need a multi-pronged approach.  To make sure we do not have an outbreak of Hep A we need sanitary areas. We need to hire 2 social workers who can help people through the social services maze and access to Psychiatric care.  We need to use private organizations like Bread of Life and Solutions for Change that have proven programs that work.  We also need to make sure that we use 12 step organization to help people attain sobriety. This is a national problem and Universal Health Care would go a long way to help but it is out of our preview.

Do you advocate any changes to the City's current policies regarding recreational and medical cannabis businesses? Please explain.
Answer from Lawrence "Larry" Kornit:

I have no issue with dispensaries, lounges, delivery or cultivation.  I want to see it taxed properly, away from sensitive areas and that those working there should have training in drug interactions. We need to stop thinking of cannabis as a psychotropic drug with medicinal qualities and start thinking of it as a medicinal drug with psychotropic properties.
