Army Colonel, Retired

Tom Umberg is a retired U.S. Army Colonel. He began his military service at the Korean DMZ and served three overseas tours. Umberg was recalled to active military duty in 2009-10 to lead the U.S. military effort to attack corruption within the Afghan Army and Police, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone.

In the State Senate, Umberg will advocate for our veterans and their families, ensuring they have the benefits they’ve earned for assistance with jobs, housing, education and healthcare.

Federal Prosecutor

As a federal criminal prosecutor, Tom Umberg had a 100% conviction rate, trying numerous white collar, civil rights and gang cases. He successfully tried over 100 cases to verdict or judgment, including complex matters involving healthcare, workplace harassment, and protection of employee pension plans.

Umberg will continue working to keep our communities safe while also protecting the rights of workers, immigrants and women who deserve to be free from harassment and intimidation.

Deputy Drug Czar in Clinton White House

Appointed by President Bill Clinton, Tom Umberg served as Deputy Drug Czar, where he was responsible for foreign drug interdiction, counter-drug intelligence and international drug policy.

Umberg has a deep understanding of the strategies and resources we need to stop the current opioid epidemic and to put an end to senseless gun violence in our communities.

Serving three terms in the State Assembly, Umberg represented central Orange County. He authored 76 new state laws and brought more than $563 million in state and federal grant funds to Orange County.

Tom Umberg will work to diversify our local economy, bringing high wage jobs to Orange County and providing affordable housing for families.

Protecting the Affordable Care Act will be one of Umberg’s top priorities – along with finding ways to expand access to healthcare for everyone in California.
