I have deep roots in the community and the school district. As a former FUESD teacher for 34 years and a current Board Member for 12 years, I have a track record of proven leaderships.

During the last seven years, the other Board Members and I, working closely with the Superinterdent, have provided the leadership that has resulted in the highest achievement gains in the District's history.  During my tenure, our district has received state awards for increased student achievement, our schools have been recognized by the business community as having top performing schools that have closed the achievemnent gap, and all students now have access to STEM curriculum and instruction to prepare them for the future.

I have enthusiasticallly supported our Districtwide leadership development program for all students, which has earned us national recognition as a model for teaching leadership skills to children.

As an experienced, motivated and sucessful Board Member, I seek your support to continue the excellent work being done by our dedicated employees .  You will find no one more prepared and willing to give the time and service needed on behalf of the children of Fallbrook.  Thank you for your vote.

Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de The League of Women Voters North County San Diego (4)

What are the pressing problems of this school district, in your opinion, and what experience do you bring to the Board that will help address these problems?
Respuesta de Patrick Rusnell:

Our District has made significant gains in closing the achievement gap. But we still have a lot of work to do on this problem.  No matter how good one gets, you never want to say you can't improve.  The board members and the district administration working together have cut the achievement gap and we have programs in place to continue to address this problem.  My 48 years in the district, as a teacher and a board member, give me a unique perspective on programs and operaton. I hope to keep giving back to students and the community if reelected.

What is your view of charter schools?
Respuesta de Patrick Rusnell:

Charter schools do not have to play by the same rules that public schools have to play by.  Until that is changed, I oppose charter schools.  I especially oppose for profit charter schools.

Should the district curb its school choice initiatives (for students who are not in charter schools), so that more students stay in their neighborhood schools? Why or why not?
Respuesta de Patrick Rusnell:

Fallbrook Elementary District has two schools of choice, Fallbrook Street STEM academy and Mail Ellis Dual Language Immersion.  Students with intersest in those areas may transfer to those schools.  I support this whole heartedly.

Are there school discipline strategies or behavioral support programs that you find appealing alternatives to exclusionary or punitive discipline? If so, which ones, and why?
Respuesta de Patrick Rusnell:

Our school district uses a program that works with students positively to change behaviors. This resulted in a very significant drop in expulsions and suspensions. I fully support this program.
