Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de The League of Women Voters San Diego (4)

Do you support increasing the housing density in your district of the City of Santee? What other options might there be for improving the City's supply of affordable housing?
Respuesta de Rob McNelis:

I believe in increasing housing density from the 2003 General Plan in areas that make sense to do so (like Walker Trails). I also believe in decreasing density in areas that cannot handle the impacts of what may have been purposed 15 years ago (like the 2 County owned sites next to the YMCA or what was originally purposed for the Mission Gorge project where Panicle Peak was). This is why each project should be taken on a case by case basis.

By providing a wide variety of housing options, a city can allow for the natural progressions in a life cycle to take place. Apartment renters become condo owners, that become smaller home owners, to move up housing owners to possibly empty nesters that once again downsize (as a generality as one size will never fit all).

Do you approve of the City's current approach to addressing the problems of homelessness? What specific changes, if any, would you make?
Respuesta de Rob McNelis:

I do approve the city's approach. The city works closely with a multitude of organizations to provide help and shelter to those that truly want it while at the same time implementing some of the most aggressive ordinances in California to deal with those that break the law.

Do you support any specific projects to promote economic activity in the City? Why or why not?
Respuesta de Rob McNelis:

Yes, I was able to bring HD Supply to Santee with a sales tax revenue sharing program that has since provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to Santee' general fund. I also opposed a sales tax increase when all of the other cities around Santee were increasing their sales tax. We then found the next year that Santee was the only city to increase in overall sales tax revenue as the other cities all saw a decrease. This is why I always say "you cannot tax yourself into prosperity!"

Do you believe that the Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) has adequate independence, authority, and resources to provide effective civilian review, if there are allegations of sheriff deputy misconduct in the City of Santee? What changes, if any, do you think should be made to that body?
Respuesta de Rob McNelis:

I believe that the Santee Sheriff's station does an excellent job at protecting the citizens of Santee with the resources they have (though they really need more sworn officers). That being said, yes I do also believe that the oversight process of checks and balances in force are fair and adequate.
