Biografía

As a renter who has worked hard all his life, experienced the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck, and has been an active volunteer in our community, Ray Morquecho knows how the challenges faced by First District residents aren’t always addressed by City Hall.

Ray and his two sisters were raised by their hard-working, single mother who moved her family to Southern California when Ray was a young boy. His mother worked a variety of jobs to make ends meet, and they often stayed with friends and moved from apartment to apartment.

Ray received his diploma from Redlands High School, his Associates Degree from Crafton Hills College, and graduated from the University of California – Irvine with a degree in Political Science. He fell in love with Long Beach and decided to call it home as he was working as a bartender in Long Beach to pay his way through college.

An internship with the California Board of Equalization eventually earned him a full-time job advocating for and supporting taxpayers and local businesses. As the District Representative for the Vice Chair of the Board of Equalization, Ray was able to see, firsthand, the importance of working within and on behalf of his community. He is an active member of the Willmore Heritage Neighborhood Association, participates in the Long Beach Area Coalition for the Homeless, is a member of the Long Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, and the Sierra Club.

Eventually Ray decided to follow his heart and try his own hand as an entrepreneur, starting a small business that has grown every year.  He now aims to use what he has learned to support others in following their hearts and achieving financial independence through business ownership.

Ray has been encouraged by his neighbors, friends, and family to run for office so he can be a voice for his community.

“From the age of five I remember my son loving two things: cars and politics. I can’t remember what made him so upset but he came to me one day as a kindergartner and demanded I help him write a letter to the President because, he said, ‘This just isn’t right’,” Ray’s Mother, Lynne, said, “and he’s been fighting for people ever since.”

Filosofía política

Ray is running for Long Beach City Council District 1 to ensure our community has a voice in City decisions. He believes this can be accomplished through civil discourse, cooperation, and through the inclusion of ideas that are diverse and generated by the people, not special interests.

His number one priority is to return local government back to the basics. Local neighborhoods should be safe, the roads and alleys should be paved, and all city services should be on time.

As local neighborhoods continue to experience elevated crime levels, homelessness, limited parking, and a reduction in quality of life, it’s absolutely the right time for new leadership and a clear vision.

As a small-business owner who operates a surfing school, Ray is environmentally conscious and understands the need to combat climate change. He also will work to ensure local businesses are supported partners in the quest to protect the environment and keep our communities clean.

Ray describes himself as a pragmatic politician who looks for solutions and best practices from all sides. He understands the local government should serve the people first and that partisan politics should never enter the decision-making process. As your councilman, he will ensure that public servants always remember that Long Beach residents come first.
